Norton maintenance

Since a couple of weeks I’ve been trying to replace the flasher unit; when riding, the turn signals blink but when stopping, for instance in front of a red light, the turn signals blinks slower and slower until they just remain lit without blinking. First I thought it was related to a weak battery but after some searching, it seems that old, mechanic flasher units use a bi-metal which, through time, gets a bit tired. As I still didn’t succeed replacing it, I’ll continue next week.
Meanwhile I did, finally, replace the headlamp with a new Lucas LUB384 (LHD). Shame I can’t find a similar one as the one I had (Lucas 7366, H4 flat glass).

It looks better but only because it is new and shiny; its quality isn’t exactly the same; glass is thinner, not completely centered, though it went with ease into the rim, the rim with the lamp wouldn’t quite fit back into the shell but needed some pushing and forcing. I guess we could say that "they don’t make ‘m anymore as they used to". But it will do the job.

I’ve also replaced the air filter.

I’ll only show a picture of the new one, because the sight of the old, with oil drenched filter could shock the audience.

Sinds een paar weken al probeer ik de knipperlicht installatie te vervangen; tijdens het rijden knipperen de richtingaanwijzers normaal maar bij het stil staan, bijvoorbeeld voor een verkeerslicht, knipperen ze langzamer en langzamer totdat ze constant blijven branden zonder te knipperen. Eerst dacht ik aan een zwakke accu maar na enig zoeken blijkt het dat de oude knipperlicht schakelaars mechanisch waren met een bi-metaal welke, met de tijd, moe worden. Omdat ik er nog steeds niet in geslaagd ben deze te vervangen ga ik daar volgende week mee verder.
Ondertussen is nu wel, eindelijk, de koplamp vervangen met een nieuwe Lucas LUB384 (LHD). Jammer dat ik niet een zelfde kan vinden als wat er op zat (Lucas 7366, H4 vlak glas).

Het ziet er beter uit maar slechts alleen omdat het nog nieuw is en glanst; de kwaliteit is niet echt hetzelfde; het glas is dunner, niet geheel gecentreerd, ging wel gemakkelijk in de chrome ring maar de ring met de lamp wilde niet helemaal lekker terug in de behuizing zonder wat duwen en forceren.
Ik denk dat we wel kunnen zeggen "they don’t make ‘m anymore as they used to". Maar het kan er mee door.

Ook is het luchtfilter vervangen.

Ik zal alleen een photo van het nieuwe lucht filter tonen omdat het oude, met olie doordrenkte lucht filter als aanstootgevend gezien zou kunnen worden.

Depuis quelques semaines j’ai essayé de remplacer la centrale clignotante; tant que la moto roule, les indicateurs de direction clignotent normalement mais à l’arrêt, par exemple devant un feu rouge, ils clignotent de plus en plus lentement jusqu’à ils restent allumés en permanence sans clignoter. Au début je pensais que la batterie pourrait être faible mais après un peu de recherche il paraît que les ancienes centrales clignotantes étaient mécaniques avec un bi-métal qui, avec le temps, peut commencer à se fatiquer. Parce que je n’ai toujours pas réussi, je continuerai la semaine prochaine.
Entretemps j’ai, enfin, remplacé la phare avec une nouvelle Lucas LUB384 (LHD). Dommage que je n’ai pas pû trouver l’exacte même comme l’anciene (Lucas 7366, H4 flat glass).

C’est mieux mais seulement parce que c’est neuf et brillant; la qualité n’est toutefois pas pareille; la verre est plus fine, ce n’est pas exactement centré et même si la phare rentrait facilement dans l’anneau, l’anneau avec la phare avait du mal à rentrer sans devoir pousser et forcer un peu. Je pense qu’on pourrait dire "they don’t make ‘m anymore as they used to". Mais ça ira.

Le filtre à air est également remplacé.

Je ne montre qu’un photo du nouveau filtre à air car de voir l’ancien, trempé d’huile, pourrait choquer l’audience.

With my thanks to Gilles for his work and of course many thanks to Gabi for allowing me to show some of the pictures from the photo shoot, who put the Norton literally in the shade (or should I say in her shade?) 🙂

Met mijn dank aan Gilles voor zijn werk en natuurlijk met mijn enorme dank aan Gabi voor het gebruik van de fotos, wie de Norton letterlijk in de schaduw zette (of zou ik in haar schaduw zette moeten zeggen?) 🙂

Avec mes remerciements à Gilles pour son boulot et bien sûr un très grand merci à Gabi pour m’avoir autorisé à utiliser quelques photos issues de la session photo, qui a réellement placé la Norton dans l’ombre (ou devrais-je dire dans son ombre ?) 🙂

For months, a colleague from work and amateur photographer had been asking if he could use my Norton for a photoshoot. Now was the Norton gone for repairs so it had to wait but now the Norton was back again we could plan something. At first he had an old, abandoned factory in mind as set but go find one around here; the only one I know about is the old Renault automotive factory but which got torn down a couple of years ago. Runner up was a quiet place in nature which we found not far from where I live at a small pond. Then again, to put just a bike on a picture, how can I say that, it just would be “missing” something; the picture would be perfect if we could find a model who wouldn’t mind taking place on the Norton. Luckily for us we found one; the wife from one of our other colleagues was happy to participate.

(I can imagine your disappointment hoping to see some really nice pictures but thing is that in France there is something like “portret rights” so one can not just go ahead and publish all kind of pictures without the model’s permission first. Sorry)
It was really fun, we laughed a lot; she had never been on a motorbike or never did a photoshoot (or as she said so) but she really looked like a professionnal. Not shy or scared in front of the camera and she didn’t fell off the bike or damage it. I didn’t have a lot to do then just sit there and watch while they were “working” but I think it was really fun to do 🙂

Sinds maanden, een collega op het werk en amateur fotograaf vraagt me of hij mijn Norton zou mogen gebruiken voor een foto reportage. Nu was de Norton weg voor reparaties dus moest dat toch even wachten maar nu de Norton weer terug was konden we wat afspreken. Eerst had hij een oude, gesloten fabriek als decor in gedachten maar ga er maar eens één vinden; de enige die ik kende was de oude Renault auto fabriek maar die is een paar jaar geleden afgebroken. Op de tweede plaats kwam een rustig plekje in de natuur wat we vonden niet ver weg van waar ik woon rond een vijver in de bossen. Maar dan nog, om een motor op de foto te zetten, hoe kan ik dat zeggen, dan “mist” er gewoon iets; het plaatje zou compleet zijn als we een model konden vinden die plaats zou willen nemen op m’n Norton. Gelukkig voor ons vonden we er één; de vrouw van een andere collega wilde dat wel doen.

(Ik kan mij uw teleurstelling indenken als u dacht hier enige heel mooie fotos te vinden maar in Frankrijk bestaat het “portret recht” dus kan iemand niet zomaar wat fotos publiceren zonder voorafgaande toestemming van het model. Sorry)
Het was heel leuk, veel gelachen; ze had nog nooit op een motor gezeten en nog nooit een foto reportage gedaan (van wat ze zegt dan) maar ze gaf echt de indruk een professionneel te zijn. Niet verlegen of bang voor de camera en ze is niet van de motor gevallen of deze beschadigd. Zelf had ik niet veel te doen dan slechts toe te kijken terwijl zij aan “het werk” waren maar ik vond het heel leuk dit samen te doen 🙂

Depuis des mois, un colleague et photographe amateur me demande s’il pouvait utiliser ma Norton pour une séance photo. Vu que la Norton était aux Pays-bas pour des réparations il fallait attendre mais depuis que la Norton était de retour nous avons pu prévoir une rendez-vous. Au début il pensait à une ancienne usine abandonné pour le decor mais ce n’est pas facile d’en trouver une; la seule que je connaissait était l’usine de Renault mais qu’ils ont démoli il y a quelques années. Sinon un endroit tranquile à l’extérieur que nous avons trouvé pas très loin où j’habite au tour d’un petit étang dans le bois. Mais mise encore, juste prendre une photo d’une moto, comment puis-je dire ça, il “manquait” quelque chose; L’image ne sera pas complète sans une modèle qui voudrait bien s’assoir sur la Norton. Heureusement pour nous nous en avons trouvé une; la femme d’une autre collègue voulait bien le faire.

(Je peux m’imaginer votre déception en espérant de trouver quelques photos magnifiques ici mais comme il existe le “droit du portrait” quelqu’un ne peut pas publier des photos comme ça sans l’autorisation du modèle d’abord. Désolé)
Je me suis bien amusé et nous avons beaucoup ri; elle n’a jamais été sur une moto et n’avait jamais fait une séance photo (d’après ce qu’elle a dit) mais elle avait l’air d’une véritable profesionnelle. Pas timide ou peur devant la caméra et elle n’est pas tombé de la moto. Moi je n’avais pas grand chose à faire que de regarder pendant qu’eux ils “travaillent” mais je l’ai bien aimé 🙂
