Our cat Pixel became ill in November; She had a fibrosarcome (cancer) when she was 9, she had surgery and radiation therapy. Then again when she was 11. We’d hoped that after all that she would have had her share of misfortune and could grow old in peace but she’s now, nearly 17, been diagnosed for a third time with a cancer. Only this time there is nothing more they can do for her than to ease her comfort.

Then there was the driver of BJ-307-JX, a Renault Mégane; every morning I drive to work taking the same road and I saw it coming, a car from the right entering the intersection while my traffic light was most obvious still green. A bit later at a next crossing I had a little chat with this courteous driver who’s only response was that his light was green (??). I’ve replied him that I seriously doubt that and that our car has a dashcam. What I said earlier, he should better be careful next time. He can thank our car’s ABS system …
I only noticed later while watching the video that the time is off, it was rather 6h57.
Also the Norton had its problems and issues; A couple of weeks ago the Norton started to ignite in the exhausts when closing the gas and braking on the engine. Which slowly became worse. Having the experience in mind when the exhausts pipes came out of the cylinder head, I kind of figured she was getting "false air" somewhere. It appeared she was blowing through the exhausts balance pipe. After ordering a new balance pipe set and having replaced the old, loose one, it actually became worse. So I thought it would be better to check with Constant Trossel from Norton Holland Works.
It could indeed be false air or either a too lean carburetor setting or again a weak electrical wiring.

But after looking at it again, it appeared simply that I didn’t tighten the balance pipe clamps enough; after re-tightening, the ignitions in the exhausts disappeared. Last weekend I took the Norton for some quick grocery shopping in Sèvres. Just when I started the Norton again to return home an older gentleman walked by with his dog saying "so, that’s an engine start the old way". Ah yes … And the good thing is that in winter, starting a Norton warms you up 😉

Nous avons espéré qu’après ces misères elle pouvait veillir tranquillement mais non, maintenant qu’elle a presque 17 ans, le véteriaire a confirmé un fibrosarcome pour la troisième fois. Seulement, ce fois ci ils ne peuvent plus rien pour elle à part que de lui soulager.

Il y avait aussi le conducteur de voiture BJ-307-JX, une Renault Mégane; chaque matin je me rends au boulot en prennant la même chemin et je le voyais venir, une voiture venant de ma droite qui entreaint sur l’intersection tant dis que mon feu était vert. Un peu plus loin sur une autre intersection j’ai parlé au chauffeur courtois qui ne me répondait seulement et calmement que son feu était vert (??). Je lui ai répondu que je m’en doutais serieusement et que notre voiture était équipé d’un caméra ainsi qu’il conviendrait de faire plus attention la prochaine fois. Il pourrait remercier le système d’ABS de notre voiture …
Seulement plus tard quand je regardais l’enregistrement je constatais que l’heure n’était pas exacte, c’était plutôt vers 6h57.
La Norton a eu ses problèmes aussi; il y a quelques semaines elle commençait à faire des ignitions dans ses pots d’echappement sur la fermeture de gaz. Ce qui devenait pire avec le temps. En me rappelant les ecrous qui sortaient au lieu de tenir les tuyaux d’echappement dans la culasse, j’en doutais que la Norton souffrait de "faux air". Il semblerait qu’elle passait de gaz par le tuyau de l’équilibre. Après avoir commandé un nouveau tuyaux et avoir remplaçé l’ancien, c’était encore pire. Donc je pensais que c’était un bon moment pour demander l’avis de Constant Trossel de Norton Holland Works.
ça pouvait être en effet de faux air ou encore une mélange de carburation trop pauvre ou sinon des problèmes des fils éléctrique.

Mais après avoir regardé encore un fois, c’était simplement que je n’avais pas sufissement serré les coliers; après un re-serrage les ignitions dans les pots ont disparu. Le weekend dernier j’avais pris la Norton pour aller faire quelques courses rapides à Sèvres. Juste quand je démarrais la Norton pour rentrer un homme passait avec son petit chien en me disant "voilà, ça c’est un démarrage à l’ancien !". Ah oui … Et le mieux, en hiver, devoir donner des coups de pied pour démarrer, ça rechauffe 😉

We hadden toen gehoopt dat ze nu al wel genoeg mee had gemaakt en vreedzaam oud zou mogen worden maar nu ze bijna 17 is heeft de dierenarts voor de derde keer een kanker vast gesteld alleen kunnen ze er deze keer niets meer aan doen dan alleen haar leed te verzachten.

Daar was ook nog de automobilist van BJ-307-JX, een Renault Mégane; ieder ochtend neem ik dezelfde weg naar het werk en zag het al aankomen, een auto van rechts die de kruising op kwam terwijl mijn verkeerslicht toch echt groen was. Even verderop ben ik nog even een gesprekje aangegaan met deze vriendelijke automobilist die me alleen maar kalm antwoorde dat zijn licht groen was (??). Daar had ik zo serieus mijn twijfels over en voegde er nog aan toe dat onze auto is uitgerust met cameras en of hij in het vervolg misschien wat beter op zou kunnen letten. Deze keer kon hij het ABS remsysteem van onze auto bedanken …
Later toen ik de film terug keek merkte ik pas dat de tijd niet goed stond, het was eerder rond 6h57.
Ook heeft de Norton weer zo zijn problemen gehad; Een paar weken geleden begon ze in de uitlaten te ploffen bij het afremmen op de motor, wat langzaam erger werd. Terug denkend aan de uitlaat moeren die uit de cilinderkop gerammeld kwamen ipv de uitlaatbochten vast te zetten dacht ik al aan "valse lucht" ergens. Het bleek dat de Norton lucht blaasde langs de balans pijp. Na een nieuw balans pijp setje gekocht te hebben en de oude, losse pijp vervangen te hebben was het eigenlijk nog erger. Dus misschien een goed moment om Constant Trossel van Norton Holland Works nog eens om raad te vragen.
Het kan inderdaad valse lucht zijn maar ook een te arme carburateur afstelling of anders zwakke bedrading.

Na er nog eens naar gekeken te hebben bleek het dat ik de balans pijp klemmen niet ver genoeg aan had gedraaid. Na ze nog eens aangedraaid te hebben hield het ploffen in de uitlaat op. Afgelopen weekend had ik de Norton genomen om nog snel even wat boodschappen te halen in Sèvres. Net toen ik de Norton weer startte om terug huiswaarts te rijden kwam er een oudere man met een klein hondje langs gelopen die zei "zo, dat is nog ouderwets starten". Ah ja … En het voordeel is dat in de winter je het er lekker warm van krijgt om ouderwets te moeten starten 😉
