The weather is changing, fall is coming and, for once, I started maintenance early this year. Though the Norton runs roughly 900km/year, I yet prefer to change oil (and filter) every year. Especially during summer, hot and around town, the oil gets very, very hot. This year (and after several conversations) I decided to switch; for quite some time I used the Motul Classic mineral 20W50. But, as some said, what they used to use or recommended 50 years ago, doesn’t mean it is still the best to use as time hasn’t stand still and progress is made. After all, I was already using the Red Line products for the gearbox and primary chain case. This time lets try the Repsol 20W50.
As I had gone through my stock of Champion oil filters I needed to re-order some. I found and ordered the same Champion filters, Ref. COF103101S, but instead I received STARK filters.
I didn’t even bother asking why they hadn’t sent the Champions I’d ordered but checked an oil filter compatibility table. Indeed, the cross reference indicates that the STARK SKOF-0860168 is "similar to".

Yet I noticed one difference and asked Constant from Holland Norton Works for advice as both filters are for Citroën 2CV but the STARK has an anti-retour valve while the Champion has not. But that doesn’t seem to matter much.

What I did notice however is that though there is reference written on the filter, it doesn’t seem to match the carton package.

I’m not quite sure how they relate nor why a different reference formatting is used on the box as on the filter but oh well, I replaced it anyhow.

After having replaced both oil and filter, tested the return of the oil which seemed to work well. At least that is done, though the Norton may not be running a whole lot during winter.
And please don’t mind the oil stains on the cover on the ground; I was careful, (hardly) didn’t spill any oil but the hose that is attached to the tool that sucks the oil out of the tank (rather than draining it) escaped and some used oil ended up next to the bottles I used to gather the used oil. Always a good idea to put some covers.

Le temps change, automne s’annonce et, pour un fois, j’ai commencé l’entretien en avance cette année. Malgré que la Norton roule en moyenne 900km/an, je préfère faire une vidange (et remplacer les filtres) chaque année. Surtout en été, chaud et en ville, l’huile moteur devient très très chaud. Cette année (et après plusieurs conversations) j’ai décidé de changer; depuis des années j’utilisais le Motul Classique huile minéral 20W50. Mais, comme certains disent, ce qu’ils ont utilisé ou ont recommandé il y a 50 ans, ne voudrait pas dire que c’est toujours le meilleur parce que le temps a continué ainsi que le progrès. Après tout, j’utilisais déjà les produits Red Line pour la boite de vitesses et la chaîne primaire. Ce fois ci, essayons le Repsol 20W50.
Vu que j’avais épuisé mon stock de filtres à huile Champion j’avais besoin de recommander. Après avoir trouvé les mêmes filtres Champion et les avoir commandé, Ref. COF103101S, j’ai reçu des filtres STARK à la place.
Je me ne suis même pas donné la peine de les demander pourquoi ils me n’ont pas livré les filtres que j’avais commandé. Au lieu j’ai consulté une table de compatibilité. En effet, la référence croisée indique que le filtre STARK SKOF-0860168 est "similaire à".

Cependant j’avais constaté une différence entre les filtres et préférais demander Constant de Holland Norton Works pour conseil. Les deux filtres sont pour une Citroën 2CV mais le filtre STARK possède un soupape anti-retour que le filtre Champion ne possède pas. Mais ça ne semble pas gêner.

Cependant la référence écrit sur le filtre ne semble pas correspondre sa boite en carton.

Je ne sais pas trop pourquoi une autre type de référence est utilisé mais je l’ai mis tout de même.

Le vidange et remplacement de filtre fait, j’ai vérifié le retour d’huile ce qui semble bien se faire. Bien que la Norton ne pourrait pas rouler souvent durant hiver, au moins c’est fait.
Et par avance merci de ne pas faire attention au tâches par terre; En faisant attention la vidange par aspiration était presque un sans faute. Mais en mettant l’huile usé dans une bouteille le tuyau s’échappait et … Toujours une bonne idée donc de mettre quelque chose par terre pour couvrir.

Het weer is aan het veranderen, de herfst is op komst en, voor deze ene keer, ben ik wat eerder met het onderhoud begonnen. Ook als de Norton maar gemiddeld 900km/jaar loopt, vervang ik de olie (en filters) liever ieder jaar. Zeker in zomer, warm en binnen de bebouwde kom, word de olie heel, heel erg heet. Dit jaar (en na verschillende discussies) besloot ik om te veranderen; sinds jaren gebruikte ik de Motul Classic 20W50 minerale olie. Maar, zoals anderen al zeiden, wat ze gebruikten of aanbevolen 50 jaar geleden wilt niet zeggen dat het nog steeds het beste is om te gebruiken omdat de tijd niet stil heeft gestaan en vooruitgang is gemaakt. Tenslotte zat er ook al Red Line olie in de Norton voor de versnellingsbak en primaire ketting. Laten we deze keer de Repsol 20W50 gebruiken.
Omdat ik geen olie filters meer op voorraad had moesten die besteld worden. Dezelfde Champion olie filters gevonden en besteld, Ref. COF103101S, maar ipv de Champions ontving ik STARK filters.
Zonder de moeite te hebben genomen ze zelfs maar te vragen waarom ze de bestelde Chamion filters niet toe hadden gestuurd heb ik maar even op een referentie tabel gekeken. Inderdaad, in deze tabel is de STARK referentie SKOF-0860168 "gelijk aan".

Toch ontdekte ik een verschil en heb Constant van Holland Norton Works maar even om raad gevraagd omdat beide filters voor een Citroën 2CV zijn maar de STARK heeft een anti-retour klep die de Champion niet heeft. Maar dat schijnt niet veel uit te maken.

Wat ook nog opmerkelijk was is dat de referentie op het filter zelf niet op de kartonnen verpakking staat.

Ik ben er niet zeker van waarom het formaat van de referentie anders is op het filter en de verpakking maar heb het filter er toch maar opgeschroefd.

Na de olie en het filter vervangen te hebben even getest of de olie goed terug komt naar de tank wat het geval was. Dat is tenminste gedaan, ook al zal de Norton in de winter waarschijnlijk niet veel lopen.
En let maar niet op de olievlekken op de grond; Ik was voorzichtig, (bijna) geen olie er naast maar toen ik de er uit gezogen olie in een fles wilde doen, sprong de slang er af ….. en de olie naast de fles. Altijd een goed idee om er wat onder te leggen.
